Merzouga Sahara Desert Photography Morocco

The drive out to the sand dunes of Erg Chebbi is pretty memorable in teh late afternoon sun.  We stayed at a great desert hotel called Kasbah Mohayut in the oasis village of Hassi Labied (sounds like a camera I know!!) just north of Merzouga.  The evening walks out into the Sahara were amazing, watching the changes in colour of the dunes and the patterns of shadows as the sun got lower.  Just after our first sunset we were treated to a moon rise which was great although not so good for stargazing a few hours later as I've never seen the moon so bright!  A couple of evenings later the moon came out a few hours after dark so we were treated to the amazing view of the night sky with no light pollution!

An amazing drive starting out from Azrou heading up over the Middle Atlas Mountains via Midelt and finally down into the much drier Ziz Gorge on the other side where Cedar trees are swapped with date Palms.

Azrou is a Berber town on the edge of the Middle Atlas Mountains.  We went on a great drive into the surrounding Cedar tree forest and saw some Barbery Apes from a distance which was cool.  Lots of snow on the surrounding hills which made for freezing temperatures at night and in the shade.  Also visited a waterfall where we had a great goat Tagine next to the river.

A stunning medina set against the dramatic backdrop of the Rif Mountains a few hours south of Tangier.  Paint your door any colour as long as it's powder blue!!!  We stayed in a great hotel above the town with great views from our room.  The call to prayer rings out from several mosques around the town in chorus so you don't need an alarm clock!!

Larache is a small Coastal town about an hour south of Tangier.  It was a bit of a hike to get here from El Jadida which envolved 3 taxi, 2 train and 1 bus ride!  We stayed in a Riad in the old Medina overlooking the busy fishing port which was great to wander around - as long as you don't take any photographs of any Naval vessels - lesson learnt!!  The Riad owner Hassan was really helpful and freindly and his house was amazing although extremely cold at this time of year with no heating!  The architecture has more of a spanish influence and we appeared to be the only tourists in town so were able to wander the streets and Medina hassle free.
