Picos De Europa Asturias Northern Spain

We had a great few days touring the Picos De Europa Mountains in Asturias, Northern Spain.  We drove up the mountain from the small town of Cangas De Onis with its Roman bridge built in 437 and rebuilt 300 years later.  Half way up the mountain is the sanctuary of Cavadonga, a huge basilica and a tiny church built into a cave, home to the tomb of Pelayo who in the 8th century won the Christians first victory over the Muslim Moors.  There is a very windy road up to the mountain top which is often featured in the Vuelta a Espana bike race.  At the top there are two lakes, Enol & Ercina.  There was about a metre of snow and the views in all directions were amazing.

We also had a wetter day discovering the local coastline, visiting some amazing blowholes known as Bufones – click here to view some images of them in action.  We also had a memorable Asturian Bean Stew or Fabada for lunch!
